In fact,\u00a065 percent of the children entering primary school now will ultimately work in a job that doesn\u2019t exist today, according to one popular estimate reported by the World Economic Forum. The question becomes, how do we prepare for a future labor market that\u2019s beyond the boundaries of our current reality?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1788 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/contaminasian.com\/dir1\/wp-content\/uploads\/kid2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>KNOW THAT THIS ISN\u2019T ENTIRELY NEW<\/h3>\n<p>The labor market has undergone dramatic changes in the U.S. since the Industrial Revolution. Many\u00a0new jobs were created during this time\u00a0due to advances in automation. But, many jobs were lost, too. The trend has continued in much the same way ever since. It\u2019s changed the way we work and the kinds of jobs that are available.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example: Historically, farming was a common profession. In 1790,\u00a090 percent\u00a0of the U.S. labor force worked in agriculture. If you\u2019d told these folks that by 2008\u00a0less than 2 percent\u00a0of the U.S. workforce would be employed in agriculture, they probably would have been very concerned. How could they have predicted that jobs like\u00a0Search Engine Optimization Analyst\u00a0and\u00a0Software Engineer\u00a0would arrive on the scene?<\/p>\n<p>For generations, Americans have had to adjust to a changing labor market \u2014 and they\u2019ve done just that. This is because, in the end, technology has advanced the economy and that has kept the labor market moving in the right direction.\u00a0One-hundred and forty years of data\u00a0show that, overall, technology has created more jobs than it has destroyed.<\/p>\n<h3>IT\u2019S STILL IMPORTANT TO PREPARE<\/h3>\n<p>A large percentage of tomorrow\u2019s jobs don\u2019t exist today. So, how can we prepare for them? Well, there is still a lot that we can do to help us be ready for whatever the labor market holds for us in the future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Expect the unexpected<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 You won\u2019t do yourself any favors ignoring the facts. The labor market is going to shift and change in the years ahead. Expecting these changes, even without knowing exactly how they\u2019ll shake out, should help you feel a little more prepared.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to\u00a0how technology impacts specific industries<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Although we don\u2019t know exactly what will happen down the road, we can anticipate which industries might be the most impacted. This is important information to have when making career decisions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get an education<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 One of the best ways anyone can prepare for their professional future is to focus on getting an education.\u00a0College grads earn more money and have lower rates of unemployment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develop human skills<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 There are many ways in which the robots will never be able to compete with us. Focus on cultivating\u00a0uniquely human soft skills\u00a0like communication, creativity and compassion to stay competitive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pursue your passions<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 We might not know exactly how the labor market will shift in the years ahead, but that doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t point ourselves in the right direction. Follow your interests and pursue your passions. You don\u2019t have to know exactly how you\u2019ll utilize your tech degree, for example, for it to be a benefit to you in the future. You\u2019ll set yourself up for success by letting your interests and abilities guide your education and career choices.
